BY HANNAH VERMONT
After the death of her father, who was also a monster and used his powers to manipulate the king, Fire is thrown into a tumultuous adventure to put the kingdoms back together again. Whether it be in trying to contain her powers from wooing the king or facing kidnappers and traitorous rulers, Fire has her work cut out for her. It isn’t until she meets the handsome Brigan, head of the army and brother to the king, does she begin to let down her guard. It’s hard being the only one of her kind, and the years have not been kind to Fire. She has spent her life trying to keep her powers out of the royalty’s hands to use her as they wish but now she seems to be falling for one of them. It isn’t easy, with Brigan’s barricaded mind and her lifelong friend and admirer Archer, but eventually Fire comes out of her shell to realize her full potential for doing good by the kingdom in order to right all of the wrongs of her father.
Kristin Cashore does a fabulous job of developing the characters and keeps the reader guessing until the end. Many of the secrets of Fire’s past will never be seen coming. Her world building abilities are worth praise for how clearly she brings it all together. From the descriptions of Fire’s enticing hair to the manipulative powers she holds over others, the reader will always feel right in the room with the band of companions.
